The Story of the Holy Face Devotion

A devotion was first presented to Sister Mary of St. Peter in Tours, France in 1843 by our Lord Jesus Christ and she received many revelations over the next five years. Jesus revealed to her a powerful devotion He wanted to be established throughout the world - The Holy Face Devotion. The purpose of this Devotion is to make reparation for the sins of the world - specifically the sins of blasphemy, irreverence, and desecration of Sundays and Holy Days. These sins are specific to the first three commandments. Jesus revealed to Sister Mary of St. Peter that His Father was angry with these sins and that He would punish the world for them. Just as in ancient times God grew weary of Israel turning their backs on Him, He is growing weary of the world taunting Him with their blasphemy and irreverence. Just as God punished Israel, He will punish the modern world. Throughout history, God has punished man with the elements. But it was revealed that for these sins, God would punish the world with "Revolutionary Men". You might ask, "Who"? Think about our world and all of the current conflicts. "Revolutionary Men" are trying to take control of all aspects of our lives as we are headed towards communism.

Jesus, in His mercy, gave Sister Mary of St. Peter this Devotion to offer to His Father. Jesus is offering His Holy Face, disfigured with bloody bruises to His Father in reparation for the sins of our current world to appease His anger.

Jesus to Sister Mary of St. Peter, "I again give you My Sacred Head so that you may offer it to My Father to appease His justice. Oh, if you but knew the power and the virtue that reside therein! And the reason why My Head possesses this power and virtue is because I have taken upon My Head all the sins of mankind so that My Members may be spared. Therefore, offer My Face to My Eternal Father for this is the means by which to appease Him."

Sister Mary of St. Peter obeyed Jesus in all her attempts to have The Holy Face Devotion approved by the Church authorities. She was met with many obstacles, but Jesus assured her that those obstacles were only "the falling mist of the early dawn ushering in a beautiful day." Sister Mary of St. Peter was unable to see the Devotion established. She died in the odor of sanctity on July 8, 1848 at the age of 33.

But our Lord has everything in His control. The devotion did not die with Sister Mary of St. Peter. After her death, Jesus used a man by the name of Leo Dupont of Tours, France to continue her work for the establishment of the Devotion.

The story takes a little turn to a different location. In January 1849 the Holy Father was in exile in Gaeta and ordered public prayers to be offered in the churches in Rome to implore God's mercy. France and Rome were in the the middle of revolutionary turmoil. Complying with the Pope's orders, the True Wood of the Cross and the Relic of Veronica's Veil was held for public veneration at St. Peter's Basilica for three days. The Veil of Veronica is the authentic veil that Saint Veronica used to wipe the face of Jesus during the passion. His face miraculously appeared on the veil without paint or artificial colors by the power of the Divine Son. After 1800+ years the veil had darkened and its features were difficult to make out. When the Veil was displayed to be venerated another veil of silk was hung to cover it for protection. On the third day (January 6, 1849) the Canons appointed to guard the relics during the exposition and the faithful who knelt in St. Peter's Basilica, were witnesses to a miracle. On the silk veil covering the original, "the Divine Face appeared distinctly, as if living, and was illuminated by a soft light. The features assumed a death-like hue, and the eyes, deep sunken, wore an expression of great pain." The image was weeping and bleeding. The miracle lasted from 12 noon to 3 pm and was documented by many witnesses. A certificate of the details was drawn up by the apostolic notary. Since there was no photography at the time, representations of the true image of the Holy Face were copied and touched to the True Veil, to a portion of the True Cross, and Longinus' spear. They were sent to various places, one being the Carmelite sisters at Tours where Sister Mary of St. Peter had resided.

And now we return to Leo Dupont in Tours, France.

Leo Dupont was a very pious man, known as "the Holy Man of Tours". He would not tolerate blasphemy of the Lord's Name and was known to have thrown a few punches to men who used the Lord's Name in vain. He was a wealthy, well-known, retired lawyer who loved helping the religious of Tours. He had spoke with Sister Mary of St. Peter in the Carmelite convent and regarded her revelations as supernatural. He prayed that the archbishop of Tours would recognize the authenticity of her revelations. Knowing how Leo Dupont respected Sister Mary of St. Peter, the prioress of the Carmelite sisters gave him a copy of Veronica's Veil that she had received from Rome. He displayed it in his drawing room with an oil lamp next to the image of the miraculous veil, where it burned day and night. He prayed the Holy Face prayers he had obtained from Sister Mary of St. Peter - the Golden Arrow Prayer and The Litany of the Holy Face with friends in the presence of the image. Shortly afterwards miraculous healings began when those present would anoint themselves with the oil from the lamp that sat in front of the image. Leo Dupont started to get requests from people not able to travel to Tours, France for the healing oil. It is estimated that during his lifetime, Leo Dupont sent 2,000,000 of the little bottles filled with oil from the lamp of the Holy Face, each accompanied by a letter, to people with chronic illnesses. Over 6,000 certificates of cures have been documented. After his death (March 18, 1876) his home was turned into an Oratory of the Holy Face where it still remains today. The bodies of Leo Dupont and Sister Mary of St. Peter are entombed in the Oratory.

These miracles vindicated Sister Mary of St. Peter and permitted the Holy Face Devotion to be established. Archbishop Meignan established the Confraternity of the Holy Face on October 25, 1884. Pope Leo XIII elevated it to an archconfraternity on October 1, 1885 so as to make it exist in perpetuity. The face of Jesus as portrayed on artistic copies of Veronica's Veil has become the "exterior object of adoration."

From the beginning when Jesus revealed his plans to Sister Mary of St. Peter, it has been an uphill battle for this devotion to be established and to continue. For a period of time it all but disappeared. To quote Fr. Lawrence Carney, "Our Lord warned Sister that the demons would instill some with an aversion toward this devotion. Based on our Lord's warning, demons may tempt Church members to prevent devotion of the Holy Face of Jesus precisely because it is the most powerful object to fight against modern revolutionary men. But there is no need to worry because the Lord will bring this devotion to fruition as He revealed to Sister Mary of St. Peter. He gives us the weapons to triumph over our enemies in our times. This work of reparation is destined to save society."
Jesus to Sister Mary of St. Peter, "I give you My Name to be your light in the darkness and your strength in battle. Satan will do all in his power to crush this Work at its roots. But I assure you that the Holy Name of God will triumph, and it will be the Holy Angels who will gain the victory in the conflict."

Please join me in the battle to save our society. Proudly display the Holy Face of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is important to publicly display the Holy face as Jesus told Sister Mary of St. Peter, "Since this crime of blasphemy extends over the whole nation, and since it is public, I demand that Reparation be extended to all the cities of the nation, and that it be public. Woe to those cities that will not make this Reparation."
